Ms. Mandy and her team evaluated the Alcohol-Related Disease Impact application to figure out the number of deaths caused by alcohol between the years 2006 and 2010. The adults were aged between 20 and 64 years. The study also tried to calculate the number of years people lost due to excessive drinking.

The researchers found that 88,000 people lost their lives due to alcohol related causes, whether it is from a traffic accident or due to illness precipitated by consumption of alcohol. The life span of persons who drank excessively was also reduced by 30 years. The team also learned that 71% of the fatalities were men. Men are more likely to indulge in excessive drinking as compared to women.

According to Dr. James Garbutt , a professor of psychiatry and a research scientist at the Bowles Center for Alcohol Studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, alcohol is not benign and there should be moderation in its consumption.

The report also gave statewide results about the alcohol related deaths. It was 51 deaths per 100,000 persons in New Mexico while it was 19 deaths per 100,000 people in New Jersey.
