Fabien Cousteau all set to break his grandfather Jacques Cousteau’s record

Fabien Cousteau, grandson of pioneering ocean explorer Jacques Cousteau, is all set to break his grandfather’s record of spending 30 days under water. He plans to do it by spending one more day and bringing the new record to 31 days.

Jacques Cousteau, who died in 1997, had spent 30 days living in an underwater village he created. The underwater lab that he created was called as Aquarius. Fabien Cousteau, his grandson, has all plans to outdo him by his ongoing Mission 31 expedition.

Mission 31 expedition was started on June 1. A lab nearly the size of a school bus is set 50 feet below the water and is placed around 3 miles off Ley Largo, Fla. The lab is very well made up with all the facilities, a kitchen, six sleeping compartments, air conditioning and even the Wi-Fi. Things of daily need and food items will be delivered through a process whereby items will be delivered by boat, sealed in a large cooking pot and hand-delivered daily by scuba divers.

“It’s strange, but I don’t really miss much up there. I actually am very comfortable down here”, Cousteau told WFOR.

Cousteau plans to come out on the surface on July 2. It is believed to take around 18 hours to safely reach the surface as that is the time needed to let the body re-adjust and avoid embolisms, paralysis and even death.

From down there in the ocean, Cousteau also has been holding online chats with classrooms around the world. He has even had guests like actor Ian Somerhalder, marine biologist Sylvia Earle and his father, Jean-Michel Cousteau visiting him.

By doing all this, the Cousteau Junior aims at reviving his grandfather’s vision of life under the sea to “spark the interest of upcoming generations in terms of ocean exploration”.
